Another sleepless night.....

Well- if anyone was wondering how the 3rd night went with Max's sleeping....it didn't go so well. Max was up twice that night! Terrible after 2 nights of him sleeping 10 hours straight- but at least I had 2 restful nights, right?! So last night, I went to bed not even thinking about what I was going to do if he woke up, I was just hoping for a good nights rest. Max had a perfect schedule yesterday and went to bed with plenty in his belly. 2:30 a.m. rolls around and he is up crying wanting to eat. I was so frustrated and didn't know what to do. This is the time he used to wake up when he was just tiny- why this again? All of his younger friends and cousins are sleeping longer than this--what is the deal? Well- back to my story....on the spur of the moment, I decided to let him "cry it out". Of course I was thinking that this meant about 30 minutes or torture- but little did I know that he would cry for an HOUR and a HALF! Poor little boy! I couldn't back out in the middle of this as it would have made everything worse. It broke my heart to pieces and pieces. His whole life so far all he knows is that if he cries, mommy will be right there. I felt so cruel listening to his loud cries turn into weak little sighs, and then a cry every 3 minutes just to make sure I knew he wasn't happy. He finally fell asleep- but I was left wide awake filled with guilt. I got out of bed and got online and read tons of positive feedback on teaching your children how to sleep by crying it out. I felt much better afterward and we all slept in this morning until just before 8. As I walked into Max's room this morning, he was sideways in his crib and smiling the biggest smile ever. I guess he still loves me- I only hope that tonight isn't as hard :) Wish me luck!
Below is something I read in the middle of the night that made me feel better about the whole situation- I don't know who said it, but I love them :)
" The fact that you care so much about your son's discomfort should be all the proof you need that you are a loving mom!! Showing love for your child does not mean that your child will always be happy, or always get exactly what he wants. He had short term discomfort, moving to a new way of sleeping and soothing himself. You did this so he could have long term success in sleeping, and that your family could have long term success in balancing everyone's need to sleep to function. Please please please don't feel guilty about that. It is completely natural to hate for your son to have any pain or sadness, however momentary it is (e.g. during a ''cry it out'' transition). So maybe you could let yourself feel SAD that this was necessary (because it was hard). But don't feel GUILTY. You were making the decision out of love for your son, and out of the goal to make an environment where everyone gets enough sleep so they can be the best for each other. Anyone who tells you differently (in my opinion) is being ridiculous -- for example, if your daughter was 10 and wanted the keys to the car because it would make her happy, would you give them to her? What if she cried about it for an hour? What if she cried about it every day after school for an hour for a week? The point is (obviously) that sometimes you need to set boundaries so that your child is safe and your family can function. A 10 yr old who wants the keys to the car is asking for something unreasonable. I think it is also fair to say that at some point, an older infant who requires mommy to be up multiple times a night is asking for something unreasonable. You sometimes have to say ''no,'' and set boundaries, in order to protect your child and help them learn to live in the world in a way that is positive. I really hope that you don't feel like anyone would ''flame'' you for your decision. I cannot imagine the audacity and silliness that would be involved in that kind of judgment. You are a good loving mom who is sad that it was hard for her son to learn to sleep through the night on his own. Nothing more, nothing less!
You need sleep to love!"

3 times makes a habit, right?!

So, for the last 2 nights Max has slept from 10pm until 8am! I don't think I even woke up once last night until Ike's alarm went off at 7! He did so good around 4 months and would sleep until around 6 or 7am. This lasted about a month, and then out of the blue it regressed back to the 2 times per night!!! This is SOOOO hard after you know they can make it all night. I don't have the heart to let him "cry it out" in the middle of the night. Especially when I worry about him waking up Luke (not that it has ever happened...but I still worry). It only takes him about 5-10 minutes to eat and go right back down. I know, this is a BIG no no when following the Baby Wise technique which I think tells you to just let them cry after 12 weeks. I followed this book to the letter when he was little and now I have relaxed a little bit. So anyways- I am hoping this will be the beginning of something wonderful, and that he will do it again tonight, which will then be everynight until forever :) I can only hope!

Above are a few recent pictures of this cute little guy out on the grass for the first time. He didn't mind the texture and was content to sit and feel it with his fingers and toes. He set a new record and sat up by himself for about 2 minutes when I took this picture. He is getting so big, and I love seeing him grow and learn new things.

Luke's Shoe Fetish

Everywhere we go, no matter where we go, Luke is always taking his shoes and socks off! The other day I went to pull him out of the shopping cart at the grocery store (the car kind of cart) to find he had no shoes or socks on. I am glad he didn't throw them out of the cart without me knowing!

He always has to leave his friends without any socks on because we have searched high and low with no socks to be found. The other day when we went to play I just put his shoes on without socks because I didn't want to have to hunt them down after. I seem to be able to find the shoes, but the socks get lost in the cushions never to be found again. It's bad enough losing them in the dryer!

As much as he loves bare feet- he also has a love for shoes. Anyone's but his own :) If he sees someones shoes laying around, he will of course take his shoes off if they aren't already, and then proudly put them on. He is always walking around our house wearing my flip flops with the toe divider going down the middle toes.

Here are just a few of the funny shoe moments caught on camera. He loves Carson's slippers- and always runs to his room to find them when he plays there. He also found his friend Brooklyn's pink crocs, a perfect fit. And then, the beautiful princess shoes. These are his cousin's Zion's shoes that he was happy to show off for all of you :)

Sweet Little Girl

I just wanted to share these cute pictures me and my sister-in-law took of my cute little niece Marley in her blessing dress. She is so precious :) I just love the fun dresses that the little girls get to wear when they are blessed- so much fun! One day, right?!

I have a confession.....

I am sure that post title got your attention...it really isn't a terrible confession, just a little one. My little Luke, is in love with........Barney.

Yes, Barney the Purple Dinosaur. I really don't know how I feel about this. Honestly, it has been a nice break from Curious George and Mary Poppins. I can pull him away from anything he is doing if I say he can watch a "Barney Show". He would sit there all day and watch it if I would let him. He had no clue about him until my mom and dad let him borrow Barney in Concert the other day, and now he is hooked. I am just a little concerned about this. As I sit and watch it with him, the little girls and boys dancing and singing around are so annoying and say the cheesiest things. Do I want Luke to act the way they act?? Definitely not!!! I just don't know how to break it to Luke that we will be watching Barney no more.

I was talking with my sister-in-law KJ, and she said that she was very careful not to let her little boy ever see Barney as she knew what it would result in. Barney has a way of hypnotizing these poor little kids- but I am not going to let him get us, no sir! I will miss being able to sleep in as Luke sits by me on my bed watching Barney though- he would never ever let me sleep while watching anything else. But- I won't miss having Barney's I LOVE YOU song in my head when I get up to feed Max in the middle of the night. I guess I need to decide which is more important! Any suggestions on any fun shows out there with fun music and not the terrible acting and dancing? If so, let me know :)

Is this just me- or is this a really not a big deal?? By the way, my Dad and Mom tried to send us home with another Barney in Concert VHS last night- but we were somehow able to sneek out without it, thank goodness!!!

I've gone digital!

I finally made the switch, and I'm so excited!

I love to scrapbook, but I, like many people out there, don't have the time! And when I do, I make a HUGE mess! Now- I can scrapbook whenever I have a few minutes and don't have to worry about my two year olds little fingers getting all over my pictures or expensive paper. I can save time by not having to go through all of my paper and cardstock trying to find the perfect color- I can just match the color with the touch of a button! I don't have to run out of glue in the middle of a layout, or ruin an expensive piece of paper by cutting it and then changing my mind about how I want to use it. Also, there are hundreds of stores at your fingertips where you can just download everything instead of paying shipping and waiting for them to arrive. This list could go on and on.

I am going to be taking a class through Centerville City on how to use Photoshop to scrapbook. I have already figured out how to do a few basic things on photoshop, thanks to my brilliant husband- and today, without Ike's help, I created my blog header! I will have to post a few pages after I learn a little bit more.

And to think a few weeks ago I had no idea about this huge world of digital scrapbooking! It is HUGE! If you scrapbook, you should totally look into this!!
